Welcome Aboard! Print

Great Lakes Naval Memorial and Museum, in Muskegon, MI, invites you to step back into time aboard two historic vessels as well as the new state-of-the-art museum facility. Berthed near the picturesque Pere Marquette Park on Lake Michigan, GLNMM offers tours of USS SILVERSIDES, America's most famous surviving submarine from WWII, and USCGC McLANE, a prohibition-era Buck-and-a-Quarter (125ft) boat that earned honor for sinking an enemy vessel during WWII. The new Robert G. Morin, Sr. Building opened in the summer of 2008. It offers military artifacts, a theater, and a gift shop. Additional exhibits,a research library with internet access to the Navy archives, and conference/banquet facilities are on the horizon for the museum.

GLNMM offers tours (including group rates), overnight encampment programs, memorial services, and special events throughout the year.  We will continue to do this for generations to come by offering experiences that make history come alive and are accessible to old and young alike.

About Our Organization Print

The Great Lakes Naval Memorial and Museum has been thriving in Muskegon since 1987. When this Maritime Museum first started it consisted of just USS SILVERSIDES, which is how it received its first name, The USS SILVERSIDES and Maritime Museum. The museum put many hours of hard work into restoring this WWII vessel and is proud of how she looks today. In 1993, the museum expanded with the arrival of USCGC McLANE, and the process of refurbishing started all over again. McLANE is well on her way to being fully restored. This brought high hopes of further success for the museum, and the future continued (and continues) bright. The museum realized that The USS SILVERSIDES and Maritime Museum was no longer a sufficient name and decided that the Great Lakes Naval Memorial and Museum was more appropriate.

GLNMM has an enthusiastic year-round staff who helps maintain the boats, runs the gift shop, and supervises the overnight program. It is also a great opportunity for seasonal employment (ideal for students) because during the summer months, the number of staff doubles to accomodate guided tours for the public.
