Volunteer Opportunities Print

Would you like to help the museum as a volunteer?

The Great Lakes Naval Memorial and Museum has volunteer opportunities for almost any interest and skill.  Some of the on-going needs are in the following areas:

  • Vessel restoration and maintenance.
  • Grounds keeping
  • Tour guides / museum docents
  • Library operations
  • Museum exhibits
  • General office help
  • Project management
  • Welding
  • Electrical work
  • Plumbing
  • Public Relations

The volunteer program at the Great Lakes Naval Memorial and Museum presents a unique opportunity for you to play an important role in the preservation and exhibit of a WWII submarine and Coast Guard Cutter as well as other artifacts. Currently, volunteers are working on maintenance and preservation of the boats, and on other exhibits in the new museum building.   If you would like to volunteer and do not see something interesting in the above list, please contact us anyway.  We are sure that we can match your skills to a need in the museum that you will find interesting and rewarding.

Why Volunteer for GLNMM? Print

As with any non-profit organization, volunteerism is at the heart of GLNMM. Many have answered the call to help keep USS SILVERSIDES and USCGC McLANE afloat and to transform these two honorable vessels into the jewels of this community that they deserve to be. It would be impossible to name every person who has given their time, but the Board of Directors and staff salute each and every one of you who has helped in the past. We would not be where we are today without those who share our burden "to honor, through education and historic preservation, those who have served and are serving the naval and maritime traditions of our nation."

Where we are today, though, is charging, full speed ahead, toward our ultimate goal of a state-of-the-art museum facility befitting our museum and mission statement. As we close in on this goal, we are in need of even more volunteers. There is a task to fit every skill level and every level of physical activity. So, with the help of the young and the young-at-heart, together we can create an environment that will educate and entertain the community and world community about the men and women of "the Greatest Generation".

To join our team, please contact the administrative staff Monday-Friday, 10am-5pm, by calling (231) 755-1230 or click here to submit a volunteer form via email.

Get Involved, RE-ENLIST Print
Calling All Veterans! - Saturday, June 06, 2009

Calling all Veterans!!  Here is a chance for you to enlist - Again!  You can be a Crew Member at Great Lakes Naval Memorial And Museum.  We feature many exhibits including highlights of the highest decorated surviving submarine of WWII, USS SILVERSIDES, SS-236.  She held the third highest record for submarines in ships sunk during WWII in the South Pacific Theatre.

As a volunteer greeter or docent aboard our vessels or in the exhibit hall, you can introduce visitors to how the war was won as well as life at home during wartime years.

We are scheduling a Veteran / Volunteer Get-Together, with coffee and donuts, every Tuesday at 10:00 a.m.; beginning June 6th, 2009.  During this social time, Veterans are encouraged to share stories and rekindle brotherly and sisterly friendships again.  We look forward to seeing you this coming Tuesday . . . or any Tuesday.

We would also welcome anyone with gift shop or retail sales experience as there are also opportunities to volunteer in our museum store.

And finally, we will have volunteer positions available in the mechanical and maintenance areas of our museum.

Please join us for coffee, comraderie, and conversation every Tuesday at 10:00 a.m.
